چکیده

Genetic modification of crop plants has promoted concerns about potential environmental effects of this new technology. In this essay, I will discuss the environmental effects of genetic modification of crop plants using herbicide resistance as an example. Considering herbicide resistance as an old agricultural trait, it is difficult to find any reason to assess the environmental risks of genetically modified herbicide resistant plants differently from the risks of traditionally bred herbicide resistant plants.

A Review on Production of Glyphosate-Resistant Plants with Emphasis on Molecular Methods

Herbicide-resistant plants are one of the most common plants that comprise the majority of the total population of transgenic plants. Glyphosate is an herbicide that controls a wide range of plant species. Position of these herbicides reaction is 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) that only exists in plants and some bacteria. This herbicide was known to be suitable and safe for...

Effects of plants genetically modified for insect resistance on nontarget organisms.

Insect resistance, based on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) endotoxins, is the second most widely used trait (after herbicide resistance) in commercial genetically modified (GM) crops. Other modifications for insect resistance, such as proteinase inhibitors and lectins, are also being used in many experimental crops. The extensive testing on nontarget plant-feeding insects and beneficial species th...

Arthropods dataset from different genetically modified maize events and associated controls

Arthropods from four genetically modified (GM) maize hybrids (coleopteran resistant, coleopteran and lepidopteran resistant, lepidopteran resistant+herbicide tolerant and coleopteran resistant and herbicide tolerant) and non-GM varieties were sampled during a two-year field assessment. A total number of 363 555 arthropod individuals were collected. This represents the most comprehensive arthrop...

Seed bank persistence of genetically modified canola in California.

INTRODUCTION Canola, which is genetically modified (GM) for tolerance to glyphosate, has the potential to become established as a new glyphosate resistant weed, thus reducing the effectiveness of glyphosate. METHODS Volunteer from dormant canola seeds produced thousands of plants per hectare in the fourth year (2011) following a 2007 crop harvest. This occurred with no additional canola seed ...

Effects of elevated CO2 on biomass and fungi associated with two ecotypes of ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.)

Herbicide resistant weed populations have developed due to the repeated application of herbicides. Elevated concentrations of atmospheric CO2 can have positive effects on weed growth, but how rising CO2 might affect herbicide resistant weeds is not known. Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) ecotypes known to be resistant or susceptible to glyphosate herbicide were exposed to either ambient or ...
